You will have heard of Tbilisi. You may have heard of Batumi, or Kakheti - Georgia's infamous wine region. You probably haven't heard of Chiatura, Georgia’s cable car capital. Steeped in Soviet industrial heritage, this off-the-beaten-track destination is an absolute must for any South Caucasus enthusiasts. The town’s main pull is its vast network of cable cars that ferry locals around. Against the classically Georgian backdrop of the Qvirila river, the lush greens and browns of the mountainous, forestry terrain and soviet housing blocks and murals, the town is a masterpiece of South Caucasian landscapes. A true mining town, manganese production in Chiatrua totalled around 60% of total global output at the turn of the 20th century. Its latent industrial infrastructure remains a pertinent reminder of this era. For those looking for something a little different, Chiatura’s immeasurable charms should not be missed on a jaunt into Georgia.
